Joy Mini Book Tutorial

The joy mini book tutorial is here! I've broken it down into a couple sections. The first of which is the tool/supply listing and cutting dimensions. The second part is step by step photos of assembling the folders; aka the pages of the book.

3/4" silver O-wire
1 1/4" circle punch
1 3/8" circle punch
Paper Piercer and Mat Pack
Soft Sky and Blue Bayou Classic ink
Black StazOn
Sticky Strip

Inside folders (pages):

(4) 8 1/2" x 3 1/4" in Always Artichoke, score at 4 1/4"
(8) 3 5/8" x 3" in Soft Sky
(4) 3 3/8" x 2 3/4" in Blue Bayou

Front cover:
(1) 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" chipboard
(1) 3 1/2" x 4" Wintergreen Designer Paper, Color A (cover)
(1) 3 1/2" x 3/4" Wintergreen Designer Paper, Color B (cover binding)
(1) 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" Wintergreen Designer Paper, Color B (inside of cover)

Back cover:
(1) 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" chipboard
(1) 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" Wintergreen Designer Paper, Color A (cover)
(1) 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" Wintergreen Designer Paper, Color B (inside of cover)

The directions:

Step 1.) Fold a piece of 8 1/2" by 3 1/4" Always Artichoke in half along the score line and using the Bind-it-All punch the binding holes.

Step 2.) Use the 1 3/8" circle punch to punch half a circle from the top of the 3 5/8" by 3" Soft Sky cardstock.

Step 3.) Using the Soft Sky that you already punch as a guide, use the 1 1/4" circle punch to punch half a circle from the top of the Always Artichoke folder.

Step 4.) Repeat steps two and three for the other side of the folder.

Step 5.) Decorate the Soft Sky pieces and adhere to the Always Artichoke folder. For my book I wheeled the Soft Sky with the So Swirly Jumbo Wheel in Soft Sky Classic ink. Stamped a definition from Define Your Life on each page with Black StazOn. Sponged the edges with more Classic ink and then paper pierced all edges except the punched out circle.

Step 6.) Apply sticky strip to the bottom edge and adhere the folder closed. Tuck one of the Blue Bayou cardstock pieces into the folder. You can decorate the insert with pictures, journaling, etc. Repeat steps 1 thru 6 for the remaining three folders.

Step 7.) Adhere Designer Paper to the chip board covers. I used two pieces for the front of the book to create a faux binding. The inside of both the front cover and both sides of the back cover were each covered with a single piece of paper. Punch the binding with the Bind-it-All and decorate covers as desired. I used the Season of Joy and Big Deal Alphabet stamp sets.

Step 8.) OPTIONAL: sand the edges of the cover to remove any extra paper.

Step 9.) Assemble the book and crimp the binding. I used a 3/4" silver O-wire.

Step 10.) Tie a couple pieces of ribbon to the wire binding.

The book is complete! Now, if you are like me you need to find the willpower to actually give it away to someone else instead of adding it to your secret stash of paper crafting goodies that you have been hoarding.

I'm thinking this would be perfect for my niece when school photos come out... she can put the little wallet sized pictures that kids swap on the folder inserts. Although I might have to make her a bigger one with more folders!
